Opened in 1962, Fairfield Halls is South London’s largest arts centre. Following a £30million redevelopment Fairfield Halls will be at the heart of Croydon’s new Cultural and Education Quarter.
Ashcroft Playhouse auditorium seats 800 and is on two tiers with the stalls heavily raked. Originally named the Ashcroft Theatre it was opened on 5 November 1962 by Croydon born actress Dame Peggie Ashcroft. A specially penned monologue called Local Girl Makes Good by Sir John Betjeman was read at the opening and the first play was Royal Gambit starring Dulcie Grey. Ashcroft Playhouse will present seasons of plays and musicals alongside live cinema events and local community presentations.
Phoenix Concert Hall
Designed as a scaled down version of the Royal Festival Hall, (both venues shared the same acoustic consultant, Hope Begenal), our Concert Hall is recognised internationally as much for its fantastic, bright acoustics (conductor Stokowski said that the Concert Hall has the best acoustics in all of Europe) as the array of famous names that have performed on its platform since 1962 (…The Beatles, Elton John, David Bowe, Morcambe and Wise…). The refurbished Concert Hall will see the London Mozart Players return as resident orchestra. The program in the Concert Hall will be a mix of today’s biggest and brightest performers from the world of comedy, music and dance. Local schools and music associations will use the Concert Hall for their annual recitals and presentations. “The astonishingly brilliant musicians in London deserve to have a hall as good as Fairfield Hall in Croydon” Sir Simon Rattle, January 2015
